The Engineering Services Department oversees the Engineering, Planning, Zoning, Fire Prevention Bureau and Construction Code Departments. This department also administers the Planning Board and Board of Adjustment. Close coordination is also maintained with the Agricultural Task Force, Environmental Commission, Shade Tree Commission, and other Township Departments.
The Engineering Department administers all land use and construction work in the Township. The land use reviews range from an individual resident's zoning concern to the review of large-scale residential and commercial projects. The site inspection staff reviews all development and Township construction. The Engineering staff provides in-house designs for road maintenance, drainage, and bikeway/sidewalk programs. Township tax and GIS data maps are also maintained by Engineering Department personnel.
On all projects listed above:
Manchester Drive, Goltra Drive, Radel Place, and Fairview Drive East received significant lengths of granite block curb replacement.
Manchester Drive, Juniper Way, Goltra Drive, Radel Place, and Fairview Drive East (total of 2.4 miles of roadway) were reconstructed using Full Depth Reclamation, which is a more environmentally friendly road reconstruction process that minimizes costs.
Juniper Way between South Maple Avenue and Manchester Drive received drainage improvements to alleviate icing conditions within the roadway.
The Department completed sidewalk improvements at various locations within the Township, including the replacement of approximately 500 feet of asphalt sidewalk with concrete sidewalk on South Finley Avenue between Collyer Lane and Lake Road.
The Department continued with the replacement of several pedestrian bridges in the Township. In 2019, pedestrian bridges at Lafayette Lane, Stonehouse Road, and Southard Park were all replaced with new bridges.
The Department completed construction of traffic calming measures at the intersection of Mine Brook Road, Canterbury Way, and Somerville Road Extension.
The Department also completed the reconstruction of a collapsed retaining wall approximately 130 feet long on Old Army Road.
The Department also replaced approximately 200 feet of collapsed storm sewer within an easement at #148 Childs Road.
All in all, the Department completed approximately $6.2 million in capital improvement projects in 2019.
