Traffic Safety
The Bernards Township Police Traffic Safety Division is comprised of three officers: a Lieutenant, and two patrol officers. The Division has the responsibility of ensuring the free flow of traffic through the Township; the safety of the public using the roads within the Township; and the prevention of accidents. This is accomplished by the enforcement of State/Municipal Motor Vehicle Law/Ordinances, educating the public, participating in AAA Holiday Safety Programs and providing information to local newspapers. To educate motorists, the Traffic Bureau uses two visual aids: two portable RADAR display unit and pedestrian safety signs. The portable RADAR display units are battery powered and are used throughout the Township. They advise oncoming traffic of its speed, alert drivers to slow down, and observe the posted speed limit.
The officers assigned to the Traffic Safety Division are trained in Advanced Accident Investigation techniques, having attended Accident Investigation I and Accident Investigation II. They are additionally trained in Accident Reconstruction and Vehicle Dynamics Courses.
The Traffic Safety Division utilizes the Departments Harley-Davidson Police Motor Cycle. The motorcycle allows Officers to access areas that are not suitable for a full size patrol car to park, such as narrow streets. With the use of the motorcycle we can effectively utilize speed enforcement tools to monitor traffic and enforce speed limits on any road in the Township. It also allows officers access to the bicycle paths and hiking trails that are prohibitive to the patrol car.
