The Bernards Township Police Department teaches the DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) curriculum. Two DARE curriculums are taught. One is taught to elementary age students while the second is taught to Junior High students. Community Policing officers as well as officers from the Patrol, Detective, and Traffic Divisions teach DARE in the Township's public and private schools. DARE is an educational program taught in the classroom to prevent or reduce drug abuse among children and teenagers. One of the goals of the DARE elementary curriculum is to reach elementary students prior to their involvement with drugs. DARE helps students recognize and resist the many subtle pressures that influence them to experiment with alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana. DARE lessons stress the many negative consequences of drug use, explain peer pressure, promote resistance techniques, and stress the importance of making good decisions.
