The Environmental Commission (EC) and Shade Tree Commission (STC) launched a joint initiative on Charter Day to help Bernards Township recover from super-storm Sandy by encouraging Township residents to plant more than 5,000 trees over the next five years. The tree-planting program will be known as: “Five in 5.” “We think now is the time to address the overall tree losses suffered in storms over the last couple of years and begin to restore our depleted tree canopy,” said EC chairwoman Paula Axt. Her sentiments were echoed by Randy Santoro, chairman of the STC, who estimated that more than 15,000 mature trees were lost to Sandy alone. “The losses and damage were across the board,” Santoro explained. “No species was spared.” The commissions are urging Township residents to plant five trees in their yard over the next 5 years. Axt and Santoro also encourage interested residents, civic groups, scout troops and area students to support the tree-planting initiative by suggesting projects and getting involved with Five in 5. “We are very interested in hearing about potential projects,” said Santoro. The STC and EC hope that Five in 5 will provide a spark to restore the diminishing tree population in Bernards Township. For further information, see the Five in 5 link.
